Greek composer Vangelis, who was known for his famous movie themes for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner, has died at the age of 79.

He won the Oscar for "Chariots of Fire" in 1981.

American composer Austin Wintory wrote on Twitter that Vangelis "changed an entire era of music."

Oscar-nominated British musician Daniel Pemberton said it was hard to underestimate Vangelis's colossal influence on modern film music.

"It's also hard to understand how innovative the Chariots of Fire were. "A British film of the period with a phenomenal synthetic score," he added.

Vangelis first enjoyed fame as a keyboardist in Aphrodite's Child with singer Demis Roussos in the late 1960s.

He went on to be a well-known and innovative solo artist beyond his work in film, making his latest albums with the record company, Decca Label Group./21Media
