An Albanian man who escaped after serving part of his sentence for the murder of a senior police officer in Albania was arrested on Tuesday in Frankfurt, Germany.

German police said in a statement that the 42-year-old, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested on New Year's Day while trying to leave for Istanbul, rtv21.tv reports.

They said Albanian authorities were looking for the man on an international arrest warrant and that he and his father killed the police officer in 2000. He was released on bail in November 2017 and then disappeared.

German police have further announced that the man is in custody awaiting extradition to Albania.21Media
