6-year-old Elijah, who lost his family amid fighting in the besieged city of Mariupol, has written an open letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The letter, which was distributed by the British ambassador to Ukraine, Melinda Simmons, comes as Russian forces continue their offensive in the Donbas region.

Earlier in the day, Ukraine's Luhansk region governor Serhiy Gaidai said there were about 10,000 Russian troops in the eastern region.

"These are the (units) that are always in the Luhansk region, trying to attack and try to take advantage in every direction they can," Mr Gaidai told Ukrainian television. /21Media
