An American man has been found dead in his home surrounded by dozens of snakes - many of them venomous.

Neighbors alerted police after they went to his home and saw him lying on the floor.

When officers arrived, they found 124 venomous and non-venomous snakes, including pythons, cobras and rattlesnakes, rtv21.tv reports.

The largest was said to be a Burmese python about 4 feet tall.

Although they were in tanks, animal control experts were called.

The 49-year-old unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but police say there is no evidence of "bad play". Post-mortem examination will be performed.

The nearby Charles County Animal Control Center is coordinating rescue efforts to move and resuscitate reptiles with the help of experts from North Carolina and Virginia.
