Russia will cut off electricity supplies to Finland over the weekend.

Finnish grid operator Fingrid said Russian company Inter RAO was shutting down supplies because of "problems in receiving payments for electricity sold on the market".

The announcement came a day after Finland signaled its intention to join NATO.

Finland buys only 10% of its electricity from Russia and according to Fingrid it will make up for the shortfall by getting more energy from Sweden and increasing production in Finland.

Finland expects to become self-sufficient in electricity by 2023, the company added, writes BBC./21Media
