Parag Agrawal responded after Elon Musk said the $ 44 billion deal to buy the platform was "pending" as he sought details about the fake accounts.

In a series of Twitter posts, Agrawal defended the firm's estimates that unwanted accounts were less than 5% of users.

Musk responded with an emoji, later reiterating his claim that Twitter was underestimating the figure.

Analysts have speculated that Musk may be looking for ways to renegotiate the deal price or leave.

Those theories were further fueled Monday after Bloomberg reported that Musk had told a news conference that a lower-priced deal "was out of the question."

He also added that the fake accounts could be four times more than Agrawal claims.
