The International Olympic Committee has ruled out postponing the Beijing Winter Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The advent of the new Omicron variant has raised concerns around the world, both in terms of its portability and the ability of this variant to avoid the immunity created by the previous COVID-19 infection.

The outbreak of the virus in Wuhan had caused the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo to be postponed for 12 months.

However, the head of the coordination committee of the International Olympic Committee in Beijing, Juan Antonio Samaranch, said on Tuesday that the Winter Olympics will take place as planned in February 2022.

Due to measures against COVID-19, the Winter Olympics will be hosted by Chinese spectators only.
