The US authorities announced tonight that they will organize a quick and strong response to Belarus if it allows Russia to use its territory for a possible attack on Ukraine.

State Department spokeswoman Ned Price told a news conference that if Belarus allowed its territory to be used for an attack on Ukraine, it would receive a firm response from the United States.

"We have also made it clear to Belarus that if it allows its territory to be used for an attack on Ukraine, it will face a swift and decisive response from the United States and our allies and partners," Price said.

"If an invasion were to come from Belarus, if Russian troops were to be permanently stationed on their territory, NATO might have to reassess the position of our force in the countries bordering Belarus," he added.

Alarms have been sounded in Western capitals over the risk of a major new conflict after Russia rallied about 100.000 troops along its border with Ukraine and deployed a significant force in Belarus over what Moscow and Minsk say is a joint military exercise. .

The US and NATO fear that military gatherings could be preparation for a possible invasion, something Moscow has denied.

Last week, Washington expressed concern about plans for constitutional reform in Belarus that would allow the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on the border with Ukraine and Poland.
